Pupils report back on the Shakespeare in Schools Festival

For the second year running Ovingdean has taken part in this national festival working along side local mainstream schools. Two of our pupils report back on their experiences of performing Twelfth Night at the Pavillion Theatre in Brighton.

Charlie as Orsino

My character is a handsome fella, called Orsino, who is the boss of Illyria. He is a loving young man; he is rich and can buy what he wants and is addicted to falling in love easily. He had enormous confidence and doesn’t care what people think of him.

When I act, I had a lot of imagination about what Orsino is like. How can I act like him? I must think how people will know I am Orsino. I used my voice much more clearly so people will understand me. Most of the time I used my voice loudly right up in the air.

My teacher wanted this play to look more modern. She describes what we wear as East Asia something like Indian, China, Japan or Africa. I wore a beautiful gold and black dressing gown. I don’t care what people think, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m not in a fashion show, it’s only a play.

I had loads and loads of feeling when I performed, I never had a good feeling like this before, honestly. Pupils keep asking me “Am I nervous” I said to them “To be honest, no I’m not nervous and never had feeling like this since I was born, amazing isn’t?” I have load of emotions and keep thinking about what I did in the play in a good way. Now I should be much more proud of myself. Now I want to do this again, another time, honestly. Also I want my good feeling back. I wish I could go back every year. It’s was my best thing in my whole life. I shall not to forget it.

I had loads of comments from my parents, about what they think of my play. They said to me “We love your play, it was so fantastic. We are always proud of you. We could hear your voice right up where we sat. It’s totally amazing.” I had a good feeling when they said that to me.

Louise as Gertrude

My character is Gertrude. Gertrude is a servant who works in Orsino’s house and Olivia’s house.

When I was playing this character I really changed the way I talked and walked, like Gertrude. I didn’t like my costume very much, it was like a purple Chinese dress with silver patterns and flowers, but everyone told me I looked pretty in this dress.
On the day of the performance I didn’t think I would be nervous but it hit me suddenly. My feelings were upset and I was crying because I had stage fright and I was very nervous , I didn’t want to forget my words . But my friends said later ”We can hear you from far away, it was clear and loud”, my friends also said I was brilliant at acting. I loved the dressing room, it was glamorous because there were nice lights around the mirror, it was a very professional room, there was a star on door saying “dressing room 1”. I still have the lines of Gertrude in my mind.
